Blog Post #2
Breaking Bad - DP Michael Slovis
Michael is from New Jersey but went to school in New York at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He started his career in 1981 and was a camera operator for many years working on numerous films before becoming a cinematographer in 1995. He's worked on many notable films and series including Halloweentown (1998), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and his newer work which includes Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Game of Thrones. Michael has been a part of the ASC since 2010.
Sam Kolder
Sam is originally from Canada, but has relocated to Los Angeles. Unlike the typical Cinematographer that starts out working as a Production Assistant on sets and working their way up to a notable position, Sam instead used social media and more of a short documentary films following artists on tour to gain his title. Sam, who is now only 21 years old, got his start by making videos with his friends and following his adventures while redefining the way dslr cinematography and editing is done. He decided to take a gap year in between high school and college to fuel his love for travel and shoot for artists, most notably going on tour with pop/ edm duo The Chainsmokers. After his run with The Chainsmokers, Sam was offered a job at a startup travel company, Beautiful Destinations as their head of video. He worked there about a year and a half before leaving New York for Los Angeles where he seems to spend little time due to traveling. Sam now creates branded content all over the world for companies ranging from Nike to the country of Dubai.

Taylorcutfilms - DP Taylor Wright
Taylor had a half and half approach to film which got him where he is today. Taylor went to Towson University where he double majored in Business Administration and Electronic Media and Film. His career path followed a typical run as an assistant editor, followed by a videographer position for Sharp Entertainment where he filmed TV shows that aired on Travel Channel, Discovery, Sundance, TLC, Animal Planet, and Food Network. Following his job at Sharp, he began doing a lot more freelance most notably for recording artist Usher. Much like Sam Kolder, Taylor now owns his own company shooting short films and branded content for some of the world's largest companies and travel boards.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuZTQWR91aM - This particular piece is actually one of Taylor's first attempts at directing. This is a dialogue free short film that tells the story of a young couple reliving their memories as if they were a movie.
Peter McKinnon
Peter had a very strange coming into what he does now. While I was unable to find much on his early life, I did find that his career path started when he was hired to make short promotional videos for a magician. This grew him into a master of short and consumable videos which led him to YouTube. He now has over a million subscribers and post short films and travel videos, as well as works with companies to produce high production level marketing content for internet branding.

Wilfred - DP Bradford Lipson
While I couldn't find a for sure answer on whether or not Bradford went to school, I did see a list of his work including the long list of films he's done as little as gaffed on all the way up to the projects he was the director of photography for. Bradford worked with Wilfred director Russell Einhorn on a number of projects while Russell was a cinematographer. Bradford worked his way from grip to his new position as Cinematographer for the Netflix original series Best Worst Weekend Ever.
https://library.creativecow.net/article.php?author_folder=kaufman_debra&article_folder=Wilfred_DSLR&page=1 - Something interesting I found while researching Bradford is that Wilfred was shot entirely on Nikon D800's. The decision was made due to the D800's 70mm format which allowed for a shallower depth of field.
Nainoa Langer
Nainoa, like Sam Kolder and Jordan Wright, produces short films and marketing content for brands and companies across the world. He is currently the videographer at Beautiful Destinations where he took the vacant position after Sam Kolder decided to leave for freelance opportunities. Nainoa didn't go to college, but instead is a self taught DSLR film maker.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6jyJ9rbFmE - Something I found interesting about Nainoa is that he is actually still at the beginning of his career. This is his first real job in the industry. Through strong self branding on sites like Instagram and producing stunning videos and pictures, he was able to get noticed by an industry leader in this style of film.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6jyJ9rbFmE - This is one of the first films Nainoa produced for Beautiful Destinations. His use of speed ramping to blend the clips and make them flow is mesmerizing and has inspired me greatly as I was learning to grow my edits.
Dare To Live - Cinematographer Credits Partially to Director Rory Kramer
Rory actually took a very strange path to success before landing his own TV show, Dare to Live, based around Rory working for high level artists and challenging them to be vulnerable and face their fears. Rory started by making home videos of family and friends. He then started making videos at the Marina he worked at during the summer and filming for different wakeboarders around his home state of Indiana. After going to college to study business, Rory got a "9-5 job digitizing films. I hated it so much that I used to sneak vodka in a water bottle just to get me through the day." Much like Nainoa Langer, Rory had been working on branding himself for years when he was noticed by electronic star Avicii and was asked to film a music video for him. This launched Rory into the music field where he now films for artists such as The Chainsmokers, Kanye, Shawn Mendes, Martin Garrix, Iggy Azaela and many others.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X326z_D4OyE - This is tour documentary piece Rory shot and edited following the Chainsmokers on their 2016 European tour. This is super unique to me because Rory was one of the first people to introduce the new age tour documentaries while using very carefully thought out and highly cinematic shots to showcase an entire tour.
Harry Potter - DP Slawomir Idziak
Slawomir Idziak was born in 1945. He attended Łódź Film School in Poland. Film was no accident for Idziak as he came from a long list of photographers in his family. Idziak met many important connections while in school and ended up being the cinematographer for many television shows and films in Poland. For his work, he has won 7 awards and been nominated for another 10.

Jake Baine
While Jake isn't "famous" like the other names on this list, he approaches film from a highly technical stand point to produce some of the best produced music videos for many different artist including Crankdat, who has recently signed with warner Bros Entertainment. Because of this, Jake is now working with many executives from Warner Bros and getting funding to create beautifully produced music videos and documentaries. Jake is a junior film student at Texas State.
